Archibald Joseph Stanaway was born in 1886, the 12th child of Henry and Rose Stanaway (Birth Certificate Number 1886/8275) in Helensville.
We have no records of Archibald’s early life but we suspect it was much the same as his siblings and other children growing up in Helensville at that time.
The first record we have of Archibald is from the 1911 Electoral Roll where he is living at 93 College Road, Freemans Bay in Auckland and is listed as a Warehouseman.
In 1913 Archibald, at the age of 27, marries Georgina Laurel Sakey (Marriage Certificate Number 1913/997). Georgina is the daughter of George Henry Sakey (1854-1940) from Coromandel and Elizabeth Procter (????-????). Not much is known about Georgina’s family other than she was the seventh of eight children.
On 15 December 1915, Archibald and Georgina have a son – Noel (1915 – 2005).
In 1917 Archibald is listed in the WWI Reserves Roll, Auckland 2nd Division – he is listed as a Commercial Traveller and living at Calliope Road, Stanley Bay, Auckland.
From the 1919 Electoral Roll we have Archibald living at 123 Calliope Road in Devonport and listed as a Commercial Traveller.
From 1928 until 1949 in the Electoral Rolls we have Archibald and Georgina living at 32 Sarafield Street, Ponsonby, Auckland then at number 44 of the same street (which their son Noel Stanaway was living). Archibald is listed all this time as a Commercial Traveller.
In 1930 we know there is a civil proceeding filed by a Sybil Petherbridge of Devonport against Archibald, the proceedings of which we have no information.
In 1954 Archibald and Georgina have moved to 20 Alverstone Flats, Auckland Central and he is now listed as a Clerk, they are recorded still there in the 1957 Electoral Roll.
The 1963 Electoral Roll now has Archibald as retired and he and his wife have moved to Oneroa on Waiheke Island.
On 26 May 1965 at the age of 80, Georgina passes away and is buried in the Mangere Cemetery.
Archibald passed away 16 September 1968 aged 82 (Death Certificate number 1968/34718) in Auckland (Oneroa – Waiheke Island) and is buried in the Mangere Cemetery.
We know from his will he only had one child – Noel Bernard Stanaway (A quantity Surveyor).
