Stanley John (Jack) Stanaway was born 26 November 1903 in Tangowahine, he was the fourth child to Charles George and Elizabeth Stanaway (Birth Certificate Number 1903/7170).

From an article in the Professional Skipper – Sebtember/October 2003 issue, under Coastal Characters – Stanaway – that’s a well known nautical name! written by Baden Pascoe we read the following;

Jack stayed on the Kaipara and worked on local towboats. He did not venture far from home during his long career, and stayed in the area to the end of his life.
